Shaving Lingo and Suggestions

So you hear it time after time, never shave against the grain, right? But do you really understand the difference between shaving with the grain (WTG), across the grain (XTG) and against the grain (ATG)?

WTG is an abbreviation that stands for with the grain. It refers to a shaving stoke in which one shaves in the same direction that the hair grows.

XTG is an abbreviation that stands for across the grain. It refers to a shaving stroke in which one shaves in a direction perpendicular to that in which the hair grows. For example, if the hair grows "north-to-south," then an XTG pass may shave "east-to-west" or "west-to-east."

ATG is an abbreviation that stands for against the grain. It refers to a shaving stroke in which one shaves in a direction opposite that in which the hair grows. For example, if the hair grows "north-to-south," then an ATG stoke will shave "south-to-north."

Now that you know the differences between the 3 different types of strokes, have a read below and try to incorporate my shaving recommendations in to your next shave…

Prior to shaving, gently wash your face with warm water or steam with a small towel soaked in hot water. This softens the beard and relaxes the face muscles. (Or if you prefer, shave in the shower by touch as this is also a great technique.)

Chose your shaving weapon to battle your stubble. I suggest doubling up by layering King of Shaves AlphaGel over their Kinexium Shaving Oil for intense lubrication, increased skin protection and enhanced results.

Using a clean razor, shave in the direction of beard growth (WTG). Let the razor glide over the skin without excessive pressure. Start at the sideburns and work down each side of the face toward the chin.

To shave the area under the nose, push the nose upwards with one finger, shaving sideways across the top lip. Always shave in the direction (WTG) of the beard growth below the jaw line. With your free hand, feel around the face for any missed hairs and repeat if necessary.

Once you have shaved your entire beard WTG, try shaving XTG to get a super smooth shave. However, never shave ATG! Shaving ATG causes ingrown hairs and shaving irritations.

After shaving rinse the face with cool water and apply an alcohol-free post shave lotion. Only apply cologne to the sides of the neck and chest as the alcohol can irritate your skin especially if you plan to wear a collared shirt.
